FRIECHRICH MERZ
CRYPTO FRIENDLY CHANCELLOR OF GERMANY
Friedrich Merz is a prominent German conservative politician who has been the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since January 2022. He is known for his socially conservative and economically liberal views, advocating for economic liberalism and reduced bureaucracy. Merz has been a vocal supporter of the European Union and NATO, describing himself as a “truly convinced European” and a “transatlanticist.”
Merz’s political career has seen him serve in various capacities within the CDU, including as the chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bundestag. He has also been involved in promoting German-American understanding through his role in the Atlantik-Brücke association.
In 2024, Merz became the designated candidate for Chancellor of Germany for the 2025 federal election. His candidacy is seen as a potential shift towards a more traditional conservative and pro-business stance within the CDU. Merz has been critical of the previous government’s handling of economic issues and has proposed policies aimed at revitalizing the German economy.
His political journey includes a period of withdrawal from politics after a disagreement with former Chancellor Angela Merkel, during which he pursued a successful career in the private sector. He returned to politics in 2021 and has since been working to reshape the CDU’s political agenda, including a controversial revision of the party’s manifesto that has sparked debate on issues such as Islam and migration.
